1.3.1. Introduction
The Materials Design Maintenance program (MDMaintenance) is the single tool to install, update, modify and repair your MedeA installation. Depending on where MDMaintenance is started, different options are available: The installation option appears only if the Maintenance program is started on a read-only disk, drive, partition, etc. To see and use the update option, MedeA (or parts) needs to be already installed. Below we provide more details on MDMaintenance started from the ISO images of the installation DVD and the installation directory.
1.3.2. Using MDMaintenance from the ISO Image
1.3.2.1. Mounting the ISO Image
In case you do not know how to mount an ISO image of a DVD, please read the Section Mounting the ISO image for more details.
1.3.2.2. Starting MDMaintenance
On Windows, go to the mounted drive, DVD Drive (E:) for example, change to the folder Windows-x86_64 and double-click on MDMaintenance. To start MDMaintenance with administrator rights, right-click on MD Maintenance >> More >> Run as administrator
On Linux, change to <mounted_ISO_dir>/Linux-x86_64 and start MDMaintenance:
./MDMaintenance
add sudo to start MDMaintenance with administrator rights.
The choices are:
- Update an existing MedeA installation: Updates the existing MedeA version from the ISO image. Read the Section Update from ISO image for more details.
- Install MedeA Software: Install MedeA on a new machine from the ISO image. Read the Section Installing MedeA on Windows and Linux from ISO for more details.
- Prepare for Installation: Generate license parameters in preparation for issuing a license.
- Install in Applications Menu: Create shortcuts on the Desktop and Applications Menu. Read the Section Creating Shortcuts for more details.
1.3.3. Using the Installed MDMaintenance Program
1.3.3.1. Starting MDMaintenance
On Windows, go to the Windows Start Menu >> Materials Design, and click on MD Maintenance. To start MDMaintenance with administrator rights, right-click on MD Maintenance >> More >> Run as administrator
On Linux, go to <install_dir>/Linux-x86_64 and start MDMaintenance:
./MDMaintenance
add sudo to start MDMaintenance with administrator rights.

Start MDMaintenance with administrator rights to manage the JobServer and TaskServer services
The options are:
1.3.3.2. Update from the Web
The Update from the Web option updates the installed MedeA software from the Materials Design Update Server. Note that your local firewall may block the web feature and you might have to download the installation medium (Windows Installer or ISO images) and update from there.

1.3.3.3. Manage MD Services
The Manage MD Services option allows you to create/remove and start/stop the JobServer and TaskServer services.

Administration rights are needed to use this option.
Note
Since MedeA 3.1 and in MedeA 3.8, the JobServer and the TaskServer service scripts are located in the directory
/etc/systemd/system while in older MedeA versions (3.0, 2.22, etc),
the service scripts are located in the directory /etc/init.d
The status of each JobServer and TaskServer are shown in the parentheses.
Extra services can be created and this refers to additional TaskServer and MedeA Queues (not queues of batch/queuing systems). Please see the Sections JobServer and TaskServer Administration and Configuration and Creating a Manual TaskServer and Queue for more details.
1.3.3.4. Import Jobs and Reconnect Jobs
The Import Jobs and Reconnect Jobs options provide interfaces to import selected job directories from disk.
Use Import Jobs for job directories from a different JobServer, but keep in mind that job numbers will change. You can also import the test jobs provided in the folder Testjobs which is located in the MedeA root installation directory.
Reconnect Jobs takes the existing Job directory (with an empty Job database MDJobs) and recreates the Job database keeping old job numbers. This is used for migrating from an older JobServer.
